Top 5 Tips On Getting Upgraded On Flights
For many travellers, paying thousands of dollars for a business class ticket in order to fly in greater comfort simply isn’t an option. But what most people don’t realize is that a lot of airlines will upgrade passengers from economy class for free as long as they meet certain guidelines. These tips are considered by many regular travelers to be the holy grail of getting something for nothing and they came direct from the check in staff of some of the best-known airlines.
You Need to Look the Part. Make sure that you are dressed smartly when you travel. There is almost no chance of getting a free upgrade if you are wearing shorts and a scruffy t-shirt, so at the very least, check in wearing a shirt and pants. Unless you really want to, there is no need to wear a suit and go overboard. The key is to look smart, but not like you’re trying too hard.
Turn Up Early. Since the check in staff know exactly how many passengers are traveling on a particular flight well in advance, they will know straight away if there are seats to spare in business class.
Being Polite is a Must. Put yourself in the place of the check in staff. Would you rather give a reward to someone who is shouting the odds and starts giving you some attitude or to someone who gives you the time of day and is always pleasant? In the queue behind you, there may be about 250 people so make them remember you. If you flirt, smile, be nice, and use their name, then it’s likely that you will get a pleasant surprise.
Are You a Frequent Flier? You are more likely to be at the front of the queue of an upgrade if you join a frequent flier program of an airline because the airline will want to reward you for your loyalty. Go to the airline’s website and join their program online even if you do not fly regularly. This will be well worth the time and it will only take a minute or two.
Ask Around. You may be aware of the fact that unless you ask for something, you won’t get it so make sure that you do but also make sure that it’s at the right time. Wait until you get to the gate and don’t bother to ask the check in staff if the they look stressed and no amount of charm has elicited a smile. When you ask the counter staff and they responded well and asked you if you have a specific seat request, you can be cheeky and tell them First Class. You never know, it might just work.
