Masaya – Nicaraguan craft
The Masaya volcano is still active as shown here
Masaya is both a province and a city in Nicaragua. The city is located between colonial Granada and the capital Managua. The cities main industries are agriculture and crafts and it is home to 100k persons. Masaya produces a lot of the food consumed in Nicaaragua and the food produced here is shipped north to cities like Managua and Leon. Masaya is somewhat of a poorly hidden gem as most people go directly to Granada without stopping at Masaya. Laguna is home to the national zoo, laguna de apoyo, vulcano masaya and the biggest art market in Nicaragua. The volcano is almost always spewing smoke and is well worth a visit. The vulcano is active and have smaller eruptions more or less each yer. There is also a lot of wildlife including parrots that you can see there.
The laguna apoyo is a lake formed in the crater of a dead volcano. This is a great stunning place that every one should see. It offers good swimming opertunities and is home to some stunning Endemic cichlids. Laguna Masaya is another vulcanic lake and this is also well worth a visit allthough not as spectacular as laguna de apoyo.
the art market is the biggest in the country and maybe in central america. The prices are higher than in soe other venues but the selection of different craft items is far superior to all other markets. Provided that you are willing to walk away you can get a good deal by haggling.
Here you can also visit a famous food market each night. While here you should try Nicaragua food you just might fall in love with the taste.
