Why You Should Go to Costa Rica

Lots of people now go on Costa Rica holidays. This is a very colourful destination and it will be soon apparent why so many individuals keep returning. This is also the reason why Costa Rica has become the most travelled to destination in the whole of Central America.

Most of the time when you go away even on walking holidays or self drive holidays it can be useful to find out a little about the destination you plan on visiting. For those of you who want to drive whilst in Costa Rica it is good to know that it won’t be all that different from your driving back home. The cities are well established and you will find most of the roads across the country to be in good condition.

Talking about diving now this is a popular activity that takes place all over the country. Once you see the beautiful beaches and crystal clear waters you will surely want to take part as well. There are a multitude of different dive spots around the country and you are sure to find somewhere to rent gear from.

With regards to the weather there are two distinct seasons in the tropical Costa Rica. December to April is the dry season with May to November being the wet season in the country. In most cases you will want to travel during the dry season, as excess rain during the wet season will make the environment very humid.

If you like your home food then you will be in lucky as Costa Rica has many of the westernised restaurant chains. But bear in mind that this is mostly going to be in the bigger cities and it is always nice to try some of the local dishes.

There also lots of well visited islands in Costa Rica that will be worth your time to take a look at. These islands are very cleaned and you will be able to take part in many activities here. One of the more popular islands worth going to is Turtle Island.

Add to Your Adventure – Crossing the Border – Nicaragua Costa Rica!

Crossing the border (frontera) from one country to another in Central America is relatively easy except going into Costa Rica. Generally you can drive the PanAmericana Highway without having to go through long border crossings from Guatemala to Costa Rica.

Once a upon a time Costa Rica created convenience. Now they create adventure.Travelling to Costa Rica by road is another adventure they decided for you.

This can take anywhere from a half hour to 2 hours +…

Driving your vehicle when crossing becomes a little bit more complicated. If it’s in your mind to take another person’s vehicle-… It is prefarable if you do not try doing that.

For those who drive their vehicle the list below will be of much use. In the case of not driving then just delelte those parts or items dealing with vehicles.

Items required:

  • a couple of pens – in case one gives up on you
  • valid passport with current stamps
  • valid exit visa stamp if you are a resident of Nicaragua but not a citizen
  • valid exit documentation for your Nicaraguan vehicle should you be driving. With the local Officials it could at least take from a half a day to 2 days depending on your luck. This requirements are given by a local Policia In the town where your vehicle is registered.
  • valid vehicle registration card – circulation
  • proof of insurance for your vehicle
  • cedula – should you be a resident
  • valid drivers licence.
  • 3 photocopies of your passport (main page), vehicle registration, insurance certificate, exit visa for your vehicle, cedula, (include front and back side of all documents that have printing or stamps)
  • patience – generally more then usual – simply because you do not know what kind of adventure you are going to run into.
  • a spare batch of patience just waiting for the real fun adventures you may have.
  • a high dose of positive attitude and humor
  • plenty of small denomination bills – Cordobas or dollars (US) on the Nicaraguan side and Calones or dollars (US) on the Costa Rica side. Banks may give security for rates of exchange. But you miss the adventure of bartering for a better rate from the coyotes. To do that you have to know the exchange rates.

It commonly takes around 30 minutes to 1 hour. If the traffic is heavier than the usual, it can tale longer at the boarder. Mostly equal time for each country.

Leaving Nicaragua:

First charge. The charged for crossing the boarder for 4 people with a vehicle is 80 Cordobas (about .00). Tax for the local town.   Based upon number of people in vehicle.

If you already have paid for the entrance into the boarder you must go to the offices where you obtain a free customs form. When you get to see all the buses lined up in the center that is where the building is. To register where you have been, where you are going and where you are from….

It is important to make sure you have your Passport out and ready to fill the proper information out. (most of the times both in English in Spanish the forms are generally bilingual)

By the time you have the forms filled out you then have to stand in line…

At the time the Migrations Officials stamp your passport and sen you to your final destiny. Non-resident’s cost .   This can change at any time.

IF you are traveling with your own vehicle you must also go to another office on the Nicaragua side.

Where you get here the local inspector will provide you with an inspection form, then if you are lucky and the Policia are on sight you should have them sign off on the inspection,.

With the vehicle inspection form signed off by both the

  • inspector and
  • Policia

you then get to stand in line to have the migration officer check for

  • properly signed vehicle inspection,
  • the proper registration,
  • insurance,
  • exit papers for your vehicle, and
  • driver’s license.

By the time they certify then you go to the next line to wait and have the Policia check for the proper registration, insurance, exit papers for your vehicle, and driver’s license.

Once all is certified you will get a vehicle exit ticket that should be given to the migration exit post- the next stop.

Before proceeding to the fumigation office, at the exit, hand your exit ticket to the officer at the exit post. It will approximately cost you 60 Cordobas. $4.00) and this for the spraying of your vehicle to disinfect it before going into Costa Rica.
