Are informal or formal greetings the secret to fast learn Spanish?
Latin America Spanish people are decidedly more formal than their North American counterparts.
Hola/hello when greeting someone you already know is acceptable protacol. If you are greeting someone for the first time, your best bet is to use a more formal greeting.
Buenos dias – Good morning.
Buenas tardes – Good afternoon.
Buenas noches – Good evening.
Something that you’ll hear a lot in Latin America, and maybe the politest thing you could do, would be to follow up the greeting with a formal title.
Buenos dias, senor – Good morning, sir.
Buenos dias, senora – Good morning, ma’am.

Meeting 2 or more people?
It’s expected of you that whenever you greet more than one person, in Latin America , you have to greet each one individually. This means double kissing with the opposite sex, and shaking hands quite a lot as well.
Asking someone how they are doing is considered polite. The way to do this is to say; Como estas – how’s it going? To people you know, and como esta usted, to strangers. Como translates to how. And estas translates to you are or are you.
