I had heard a lot about Mardi Gras festival in New Orleans and when Jenny, invited me to celebrate the festival with her family I just said yes.

Early French settlers brought Mardi Gras which is a Carnival to New Orleans many years ago. New Orleans first celebrated the event in 1743 when Marquis de Vaudreuil, the Governor, hosted Carnival ball. New Orleans carnival has quite a lot of similarities with carnival in Europe, like European carnivals New Orleans carnival is celebrated publicly; on the street and privately with families. European and New Orleans carnivals are very popular and they pump a lot of money into the economy. In the year 2000, Mardi Gras contributed $1 billion dollar in the economy.

The most important aspect of the festival is its parades, but parades are generally held two weeks before the actual Mardi Gras day. The parade dates are released during the first week of January and it normally falls between 5^th Feb to 6^th March. All the parades are organized by Krewes, an organization that organizes Mardi Gras parade.

The main areas where these parades take place are – French Quarter, Metairie, Uptown, West Bank and Man Deville.

Jenny’s house is on the Parade route so we saw the parade from her balcony but the next day we went down to be with the crowds and soak the atmosphere.

Things to remember

1. Majority of the hotels are booked for Mardi Gras by the beginning of August and the minimum numbers of days you have to book your hotel is 5-6 days. Book your hotels in New Orleans as soon as possible.
2. French Quarter remains closed during the Mardi Gras festival and also the commercial car parks are very expensive.. Most of the public car parks around the area are too expensive and also they fill up quite quickly, even finding a taxi is hard during the event. Try to book your hotel close to the venue so that you can walk to the venue.
3. Most of the buses and street cars routes are changed during the festival so check online about the new route.
4. Bring or hire a bicycle as this is the best mode of transportation and also always lock your cycle up when you are not using it.
