Botswana, Africa’s greatest safari secret

By Sally Shayam

In it in Botswana where you’ll find some of the most exciting safaris in all Africa. There are two reasons for that. One is the exclusivity of the camps and concessions. Secondly, the animals on the plains can wander freely between the National Parks and reserves.

The authorities have drawn up a sensible policy of discouraging budget tourism and focussing on a few high-spending visitors. Making the country exclusive has inevitably raised prices when comparing a safari in Botswana to neighbouring countries such as South Africa or Namibia.

A large number of Botswana holidays in 2011 will concentrate around the northern areas and include places like the Okavango Delta, Moremi Game Reserve, Chobe National Park and the private concessions in between. Depending on the time of year, the wildlife will migrate between these key areas.

Most people viist Botswana between June and October – this is the dry season when you can expect to view large numbers of animals gathering at drinking spots ensuring excellent wildlife sightings luxury lodges in Botswana.

From November until April/May the rains green things up and with more water around the wildlife disperses. From December till February you have some fantastic birds around with many migrants and residents showing off their breeding plumage.

The wet season is also an excellent period to visit the dry southerly regions of Botswana , where the grasslands attract herds of grazers including oryx and springbok, who attract predators such as cheetah and lion.

In the national parks and reserves tourists’ movements are restricted – you can only usually move around in the morning and afternoon – but on a private concession you have more freedom.

On the private concessions the guides are allowed to drive at night with spotlights opening up a whole new safari experience and allowing you to see what goes on under the cover of darkness. On some concession the guides are also allowed to drive off road to track animals like leopard and wild dog and allowing you to get closer these amazing animals.

Whichever way you visit this amazing country, it will be a trip of a lifetime.
