Common Skiing Accidents

Unbelievable snowboard accident!

Now is the season when many people head for the snowy slopes for some winter sports fun. As skiing and snowboarding grow in popularity many people are almost oblivious to the dangers that winter sports present.

It is interesting to note that accident rates for skiers and snowboarders are about the same. It has been observed that reckless behaviour has been cited as a key cause of many collisions and accidents. And reckless behaviour is not specific to either skiers or snowboarders. Both skiers and snowboarders can be equally reckless, putting others at risk.

One of the most common injuries that results from collisions is damage to the knee. But every season there are numerous incidents some of which are very serious indeed resulting in brain damage, paralysis and even death.

Here is just a glance at some of the most common accidents that occur on the slopes.

Collisions.

There is a skier responsibility code that tells us that people further down the slope always have right of way. Avoiding them is your responsibility. There are always people on the slopes who are oblivious to the code of skier responsibility or how to avoid collisions.

While many collisions result in nothing more than bruised egos they can be very serious with people suffering paralysis and even death. The most common injury on the slopes as a result of collisions is damage to the legs.

And collisions are not only between people. Skiers and snowboarders can often run into trees, rocks and even ski slope maintenance tractors. Running into a stationary object when skiing or snowboarding can result in very serious injuries.

Falling.

Falling over is a natural side effect of sliding around on frozen water. But falling is another way that many skiers damage their knees.

Avalanches.

Very few recreational skiers or snowboarders will ever have to negotiate an avalanche. As long as you stay within the designated skiing areas you should be safe.

If you are headed for some winters sports fun this season make certain that you have some good ski insurance or adventure travel insurance that will cover you in the event that you suffer injury on the slopes. Travel insurance should be at the top of your travel essentials list wherever you are going.

Insurance is important when out on the slopes

Instead of watching it on the television why not go out and give winter sports a go. Now obviously you cannot just jump straight in there without first having lessons as you are likely to cause yourself some serious damage. Even if you are an experienced skier there is still no way to tell if you are going to have an accident or not. 1 out of every 100 skiers are likely to suffer an injury in a typical 5 day ski holiday. On the other hand if it is snowboarding you are into then the accidents are doubled with 1 in 50 gaining an injury.

It is not meant death by injury just perhaps a break or two. Without insurance even a broken limb could be very costly to you. Although it is going to be a lot more expensive to ski in places like Europe this year as for Brits the Euro is at a all time low in the exchange rates the cost of travel insurance can still be low. For just under twenty pounds you can get yourself covered against all types of injuries which of course could benefit you if you unfortunately turn out to be one of these people who injures themselves on the slopes.

Do not let the current economical climate get you down this winter, get to another one and tear up the slopes knowing that if something does go wrong you have some insurance to back you up. I-pod insurance could also come in useful if you are looking to take it with you.

Of course if you are at home it is worth checking the home insurance to see if it covers you from everything. Sometimes only home emergency insurance will cover you from the less obvious things that are care potentially going to cost a lot of money to fix.
